Godzilla (ゴジラ) Synopsis
At the scene of the Bikini Atoll nuclear bomb test in 1954, a huge figure with jagged spikes rises from the water as the bomb is detonated. In 1999, scientists Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) and Graham (Sally Hawkins) are called to a strip mine in the Philippines where a colossal skeleton and two egg-shaped pods have been discovered. One has hatched and something has escaped to the sea. In Japan, the Janjira nuclear plant experiences unusual seismic activity. Plant supervisor Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston) sends his wife Sandra (Juliette Binoche) and a team into the core to check the sensors.
When the team is inside, an explosion occurs, threatening to release radiation to the outside. Sandra and her team are not able to escape, and the plant collapses into ruin. The disaster, attributed to an earthquake, results in the quarantine of the Janjira area. Fifteen years later, Joe's son Ford (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) is an explosive ordnance disposal officer in the United States Navy, living in San Francisco with wife Elle (Elizabeth Olsen) and son Sam (Carson Bolde). When Joe is arrested for trespassing in the quarantined area, Ford travels to Japan.
Intent on uncovering the true cause of the disaster, Joe convinces Ford to accompany him to their old home to retrieve floppy disks containing vital seismic data he recorded before the plant's collapse. They are captured and taken to a secret facility within the power plant's ruins. Inside is a massive chrysalis, which is being studied by Serizawa and Graham. The chrysalis hatches and unleashes a colossal winged creature, which devastates the facility and flies off. Joe is critically wounded and eventually dies from his injuries. Serizawa, Graham and Ford join US Navy Admiral Stenz (David Strathairn) on the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga (CVN-88) to track the creature.
Ford is told that the creature was a MUTO (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism), an ancient creature which feeds off radiation. As the earth's radiation subsided, it moved underground. It, in turn, is hunted by “Godzilla”, a much larger animal that was awakened during a deep sea expedition in 1954. Its existence has been continually covered up following numerous failures to kill it with nuclear weapons. Ford reveals that Joe had tracked a form of echolocation from Janjira, indicating the MUTO was communicating with something else.
A U.S. Army Special Forces team finds the wreckage of a Russian nuclear submarine in a Hawaiian forest and finds the MUTO feeding on its reactor. The military attacks the MUTO and a battle ensues at Honolulu International Airport. Godzilla arrives, causing a tsunami that devastates Waikiki. The MUTO, however, flies away. At the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository, the second Philippines pod, believed to be dead, has hatched into a larger, female MUTO which escapes and destroys Las Vegas. The scientists conclude that the two creatures will meet to breed.
The Navy strike force follows Godzilla and determines the monsters will meet in San Francisco Bay. Stentz approves a plan to kill all three monsters with a powerful nuclear weapon, over the objections of the scientists, who claim that Godzilla can destroy the MUTOs. A train —loaded with two warheads— heads to the city, but is destroyed by the female, which consumes one of the warheads. The other warhead is airlifted to San Francisco, where it is put on a boat and armed. The male steals the warhead and the female constructs a nest around it in downtown San Francisco.
After the military is defeated in a confrontation with Godzilla at the Golden Gate Bridge, Stentz agrees to allow Godzilla to fight. While the MUTOs fight Godzilla, Ford and a team of soldiers attempt to disarm the warhead in the nest, entering the city by HALO jump. The warhead is damaged and cannot be disarmed so they take it to a boat for disposal at sea. Ford destroys the nest, distracting the female from the fight. Godzilla then kills the male by smashing it into a skyscraper which collapses onto Godzilla. At the dock, the female kills the team at the boat. Godzilla kills the female MUTO using his atomic breath, then collapses. Ford gets the boat out to sea and is saved by a rescue team just before the warhead detonates.
In the aftermath, Ford is reunited with his wife and son. Godzilla, now hailed as the "King of the Monsters" and "The City's Savior" by the media, unexpectedly awakens and delivers one last roar before returning to the sea.
Godzilla (ゴジラ) Movie Review
The movie is the story of the <Godzilla> in the current year, which is year 2014. I feel sad when Sandra was killed during the explosion on Joe's birthday in the year 1999 due to the earthquake. After 15 years, Ford faced a lot of trouble after he save his father from the police station, such as the disaster when he sit on the train in Hawaii, and during the journey from Hawaii to San Francisco. It's really touching when the MUTO was defeated by the Godzilla and able to meet his family. Defeat the MUTO, the giant creature which is looking for the radiation as a food, is not an easy job. Because the weapon that we used is not affected on them. We thought the appearance of Godzilla will destroyed the world, who knows his appearance to save the world. It's a very nice movie which you need to watch.
